Trends & Emerging Technology in the Maritime Industry

More than eighty percent of world trade moves by sea, on ships being transformed faster than at any time since sail gave way to steam. This course surveys the trends, issues, and breakthroughs reshaping global and Philippine shipping — and the Marine Engineer’s place in them.

What you'll take away

Not "does it teach?" — but "can the graduate actually do it?"

Every module pairs a technical trend with its human and Philippine stakes. These are the capacities the course is built to develop.

01

Industry structure

Read the sectors, stakeholders, and market cycle that move 80% of world trade by sea.

02

Regulatory literacy

Navigate the IMO, ILO, STCW, and MLC framework that governs every ship and seafarer.

03

Labor & economics

Weigh shipping economics, ports, and the Filipino seafarer in the global labor market.

04

Safety & environment

Judge maritime safety, security, and the MARPOL regime protecting the sea.

05

Green & digital shift

Name the decarbonization, digital, and autonomy trends remaking the fleet.

06

Human & blue economy

Confront diversity, welfare, and the sustainable blue economy of the ocean.

The course

A course on the trends and technologies remaking the maritime industry

The maritime industry is the invisible engine of the modern world: more than eighty percent of global trade by volume moves across the sea, and the ships that carry it are being transformed faster today than at any time since sail gave way to steam. This course, TRENDS AND EMERGING TECHNOLOGY IN THE MARITIME INDUSTRY (ELECTIVE 1), surveys the contemporary trends, issues, and breakthroughs shaping global and Philippine shipping — from the structure and economics of the industry and the IMO/ILO regulatory framework, to safety, environmental protection, decarbonization, digitalization, diversity, welfare, and the sustainable blue economy — in support of the professional formation of the Officer in Charge of an Engineering Watch under STCW.

How each module is built

One rhythm, fifteen times

Every module opens with its Course Outcome and Learning Outcomes, then moves through an introduction and lesson sections. Callouts deepen the reading, and each closes with a task, a self-check quiz, essay or activity prompts, and APA-7 references.

⚓ Did you know?

A surprising fact that anchors the idea in memory.

⚓ Maritime snapshot

A concrete case from the sea, often Philippine.

⚓ Think about it

A prompt that turns the concept back on the reader.
